The State of Texas recognizes telecommunicators (dispatchers) as first responders alongside police officers, firefighters and paramedics. The role of telecommunicator is comparable to other first responder positions in complexity and stress, but typically operates remotely from an office environment.
Telecommunicators provide for the safety of the public and first responders by staffing a high call volume, 24-hour a day, 7-day a week, Communications Unit is responsible for emergency and non-emergency call taking and the radio dispatching of police, fire, EMS and city services, among many other responsibilities.
The Communications Unit operates under the authority of the Deer Park Police Department and is comprised of 13 Telecommunicators and one Communications Supervisor when fully staffed.
